The current pandemic has us all hurting, but we must work together to overcome it. The shadow of COVID-19 continues to loom and the Philippines is struggling to implement measures to isolate people and prevent the virus from spreading.
Large Families, Tight Spaces
Filipinos generally have large families and live in confined quarters, hence, social distancing is extremely difficult to practice. The transportation system of several people crammed into a tricycle, or packed jeepneys is not an option at this point, but many of the less fortunate simply do not have a choice but to risk it as groceries are usually miles away.
No Work = No Pay = No Food
The majority of the less fortunate are daily earners…they work today, get paid today, buy food today and take it home to cook. Economies are at a near standstill, all non-essential businesses are closed, and many government offices are not operating – and for those daily earners, no work today = no pay today = no food today. The less fortunate cannot afford a fridge, the majority do not own one, so stocking up food in the freezer is not an option. All of these facts make it very difficult to keep people at home because many of them do not have a choice, they must risk going out daily to find food – but with your help, we hope to change this.
We Need Your Help
Up to this point, ICONStrategies has been spreading information on containing the virus (1 stay home as much as possible, 2 keep a safe distance, 3 wash hands often, 4 cover your cough, 5 if sick then call ahead), and we will continue to do so, but we are now organizing an operation to provide food, water and essentials to as many families as possible. By providing food to the less fortunate, we will help them to stay home and prevent the virus from spreading further…but we need your help to do it.
Our goal is to raise funds through donations to buy rice, fish, meat, vegetables, drinking water, baby formula and other essentials. We will then organize the food to be distributed to those in need – small towns and communities where the most desperate need our help. We are aiming to provide immediate relief to as many people as quickly as possible. We are not a non-profit, we are not the Red Cross, we are not affiliated with the government, we are just people trying to do the right thing…and the more donations we receive, the more people we can help.
We have already taken the first steps and have agreements in place with local fishermen to donate (or sell at cost) their daily catch for as long as possible in an effort to feed everyone. We are currently in talks with rice farmers and water stations to do the same. We must all make small sacrifices to defeat this virus, and take every action to help one another. Your donation could keep them at home, and keep an entire community safe.
Communities, small businesses, and corporations are all pitching in to work hand in hand with the government, but it is not enough: quarantines have been extended until the end of April. As of April 6, we are in our 4th week of an 8 week quarantine, but the less fortunate are in an even more desperate situation: their food has run out, their money has run out, and they are more afraid of dying of hunger than of the virus – which may lead to desperate acts of stealing and violence. Please help us keep everyone at home, every little bit helps…all funds raised will go to feeding families.
A Simple But Effective Approach
Our approach is simple: feed the people. By providing food, they do not need to risk bringing this lethal virus home – we feed them, they can stay at home, their families will not be at risk of infection, and we will prevent the virus from spreading further.
Your assistance is urgently needed, please donate what you can.
